Given the rivalry between Nick Diaz and Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller, largely stemming from the now infamous brawl in the cage at a Strikeforce event earlier this year, a fight between the two seems like a ‘no-brainer’ for the promotion.

According to Diaz trainer Cesar Gracie, Diaz will fight at the end of January, and so speculation over Mayhem being his next opponent is likely to begin once again.

“I was talking to Strikeforce a little bit about it today,” Gracie tells MMAJunkie. “No opponent has been named or anything. But he’s going to fight on that date, and hopefully Fedor (Emelianenko) will be part of it too. It could be a really exciting time.”

Mayhem has accused Diaz of trying to duck him in the past, but Gracie denies that’s the case.

“It’s kind of hard to duck someone when you haven’t even been offered the fight. It’s just ‘Mayhem’ talking about that. Until it’s been offered, you can’t say yes or no.”

However he says that if the fight is offered then they would be willing to accept it, but there would be one catch.

“If that fight was offered, yeah, we’d probably take that fight. We’d just have to look at what weight class it’s going to be in, and apparently, ‘Mayhem’ can’t make 170. We’re not going to accommodate going to 185. It doesn’t really make that much sense to call someone out, and the champ has to … go to your weight class.”

Gracie is instead proposing a catchweight of 178lbs which seems reasonable. Hopefully the two sides can agree and get this fight signed. It’s a fight that would attract a lot of interest, and stylistically it would be intriguing with both men being comfortable wherever the fight takes them.

To my mind it sounds like a main event, but I wouldn’t grumble if it was the co-main event of Fedor’s next fight either.
