No.1 Contender Cain Velasquez Won’t Gain Weight For Title Fight

We don’t know who is going to emerge victorious tonight in the Brock Lesnar Vs Shane Carwin title fight, but what we do know is that Cain Velasquez will be next in line to face the winner.

Velasquez is a very highly regarded heavyweight prospect with well rounded skills and a perfect professional record of 8-0 and notable wins over the likes of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Cheick Kongo and Ben Rothwell.

Either Lesnar or Carwin would be his biggest challenge yet though – in more ways than one.  At his usual fighting weight Velasquez would be giving up in the region of 25lbs to either man, but despite that the No.1 contender has no plans to put on extra weight for his title challenge.

“I’m going to stay at what I usually fight at,” Velasquez tells MMAfighting’s Ariel Helwani.  “I usually fight at 240 (lbs).  For me that’s where I feel most comfortable, I feel I’m quick enough there, I feel like I still have my strength there, so that’s where I’m going to stay at.”

As for who he would rather face, Velasquez provides a diplomatic answer.

“Whoever’s the better fighter – that’s who I want to fight,” he says, though he acknowledges that Lesnar’s star power would be better from a financial perspective.
