For anybody who’s watched Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua’s impressive career in MMA, tonight’s one-sided beatdown at the hands of the new UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones will have come as something of a shock.
The Brazilian has fought and beaten some of the best the sport has to offer, including Alistair Overeem, Lyoto Machida and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, but never has he been dominated and man-handled like this.
During the three rounds of fighting Shogun endured almost every strike in the book, including head kicks, muay thai knees, spinning elbows, straight punches and even a liver shot which crumpled him to the mat at the end of the fight.
All of which clearly took it’s toll, and a slow motion replay shows that as the referee stepped in to stop the fight, Shogun was in fact tapping out.
The extent of the damage can be seen in the picture below taken after the fight ended.
