With UFC 105 less than two weeks away the hype for the main event of the evening between former champion Randy Couture and Brandon Vera is starting to build.
In new interviews for ufc.com both fighters have been giving their respective views on the fight which is set to take place in Manchester, England.
Both men appear to have a clear strategy for the fight. In Randy Couture’s case, it seems that he is ready to revert back to the skill that has brought him the most success throughout his career – his wrestling.
“I need to make Brandon wrestle me,” he states. “Use the striking I’ve learned…close the distance, get my hands on him and make him wrestle me for the whole fight.”
Vera meanwhile is hoping that the 14 year age gap between the two fighters will work in his favor.
“I want to push the pace right along with him,” he says. “The question that I hope to find the answer out myself is – how much punishment can his body take before he starts to break down?”
The fighters both have a different view on what the fight means to them at this stage career.
For Couture, who has spent most of his MMA career fighting in title matches it’s clear that he views Vera as the first stepping stone towards another shot at the light heavyweight belt.
“Brandon Vera and Rashad Evans and a whole slue of other guys – Tito coming back in, Forrest Griffin…They’re all looking at Lyoto (Machida) too, figuring out how to attract that attention that’s going to put you in against Lyoto first…and Brandon is definitely a step in that direction.”
Meanwhile Vera has his sights firmly on Couture in what will be the biggest fight in his career to date.
“Walking into the octagon against a living legend like Randy Couture – one of my idols, is one of the things that keeps me up at night,” he admits. “…you know how the old saying goes…to be the man you have to beat the man.”
