After dispatching boxer James Toney after just 3.19mins of the first round UFC hall-of-famer Randy Couture spoke to the media about his performance at the UFC 118 post-fight press conference.

“I had no illusions of trying to stand around with James,” Couture admitted.

He then talked about the low single takedown he used, admitting that it was an old college move that likely wouldn’t have worked against a more skilled opponent, but Toney’s limited MMA experience made it the perfect choice to avoid being hit.

The former champion also noted that Toney’s decision to wear a form of footwear into the octagon only played into the wrestler’s hands, helping him to get a grip on him as he took the boxer to the mat.

When reminded of Toney’s pre-fight boast that he would knock him out from his back, Couture smiled.

“I’ve been in this sport a long time and I’ve never seen anyone do that!” he said.

Later he was asked if Toney had said anything to him after the fight. Couture replied that he had just said, “good job,” before joking, “at least that’s what I think he said,” which was met with widespread laughter from the assembled media who no doubt have spent much of the last few weeks trying to decipher what the boxer’s had to say for himself.
