Randy Couture: James Toney Verbally Submitted Early In The Fight

ESPN 2 aired a special post-fight MMA Live show on Saturday night after UFC 118, and man of the hour Randy Couture checked in to give his thoughts on the fight with James Toney.

“It went exactly according to plan, which is a rarity in our sport, so I was pretty happy to see it go that way,” he told Jon Anik.

Couture also revealed that he believed Toney actually tried to submit earlier in the fight.

“He actually verbally was trying to tap the first time I had the choke,” he recalls. “I let it off to talk to [referee] Mario and say, ‘Hey he says he gives up,’ and let him off enough that he got out. He tried to punch me a couple more times, but it was enough of an adjustment that I got to readjust and make the submission properly.”

As for his opponents future in MMA, ‘The Natural’ doesn’t believe we’ll be seeing Toney again in the cage.

“I’d be surprised if he comes back. He still has some things he wants to do in boxing, he talked about that in some of the media stuff leading up, but I’ll be surprised if he comes back to mixed martial arts.”

So who’s next for Couture? The former two-division champion is not 100% sure.

“I don’t know, we’ll see what they want to do. They keep throwing interesting fights at me. There was some talk about Mirko [Cro Cop] potentially in the Germany fight, but now he’s stepped up against [Mir]. I don’t know where that leaves me. Certainly more comfortable competing at 205 with guys my own size, especially with the trend in the heavyweight division, but you know, we’ll see what happens.”
