Ratings Suggest Strikeforce Were Wrong To Snub Sarah Kaufman

Prior to last weekend’s Strikeforce Challengers 9 event there was some debate regarding the promotions decision to reduce the woman’s welterweight title fight between Sarah Kaufman and Roxanne Modafferi to co-main event status.

The move was believed to have been made as a reaction to Kaufman’s less than thrilling¬† performances recently, including a lackluster five round decision win over Takayo Hashi back in February.

The decision met with a mixed reaction with some stating that a title fight should automatically headline the card, while others backed Strikeforce in their decision.

In the end Kaufman retained her title with a spectacular slam in the third round that knocked out Modafferi.¬† The highlight reel moment later appeared at No.4 on ESPN SportsCenter’s ‘Plays Of The Week’.

Today the ratings for the show, which aired live on Showtime showed an average of 197,000 viewers tuned in.¬† What’s more telling however is that the show peaked for the woman’s co-main event with 252,000 viewers, while the main event between heavyweight’s Shane Del Rosario and Lolohae Mahe could only muster 226,000.

The results will certainly give Scott Coker and Co. food for thought and gives an indication that woman’s MMA does have a life beyond just Gina Carano’s good looks.

No doubt Kaufman will also feel vindicated after commenting in her post-fight interview, “Get me on a main card on Showtime guys. I think I deserve it.”
