Strikeforce are spending the holiday season ensuring that some of their key stars will be continuing their careers under their banner.
Following the announcement that welterweight champion Nick Diaz had signed a new multi-year deal with the promotion, current middleweight title contender Robbie Lawler has also now put pen to paper on a similar contract.
“Strikeforce has treated me good and I am happy to re-sign with them,” Lawler said in the press release to announce the deal. “They have given me an opportunity to fight for the title and I’m looking forward to that and to fighting any and all of the top 185-pounders.”
Lawler will indeed fight for the middleweight title in January against current champion Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza.
This is another shrewd move from Strikeforce. Lawler has always been an entertaining fighter, and coming off the back of two exciting knockout victories his star is once again shining brightly.
Like Diaz, Lawler was also someone who was on the UFC’s radar, so securing his future in the promotion was important and helps to avoid the predicament they found themselves in with Jake Shields who ditched his title and bailed from Strikeforce to join the UFC at the end of his contract earlier this year.
