Roger Gracie proved tonight beyond all doubt that he can successfully make the transition from BJJ superstar to dangerous mixed martial artist with a first round victory over veteran Trevor Prangley.
Gracie showed his growing comfort level on the feet early in the fight, using his jab to keep Prangley at range and even firing off the occasional kick.
Midway through the round the opportunity to take the fight to the floor presented itself, and Gracie found himself on top of the wrestler, exactly where he wanted to be.
After patiently working to ensure Prangley wouldn’t be able to spring back to his feet, Gracie was soon threatening to mount the South African, who tried to shake him off only to find Gracie seizing his back instead.
That was the beginning of the end as Gracie slickly locked in the body triangle and sunk in a fight-ending rear-naked choke with 4.19mins on the clock.
Gracie is now 4-0 in his MMA career, with all four wins coming by way of submission. With a continually improving stand-up game and unparalleled ability on the floor he’s rapidly developing into an exciting new star for Strikeforce in a division that would certainly benefit from it.
