Strikeforce’s first major event of 2011 on January 29th is slowly coming together with the news that BJJ master Roger Gracie is set to face veteran campaigner Trevor Prangley.
The light-heavyweight clash, which was first revealed by Sherdog, joins a middleweight title fight between Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ souza and Robbie Lawler plus the return of Herschel Walker on the card. Despite earlier reports Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio Silva will not fight at the event however.
The 6ft 4″, 205lb Gracie is currently the member of the famous Brazilian family who’s appears most likely to succeed in mixed martial arts. He’s already one of the premier Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioners in the world and has also shown potential in his striking as well, with his jab in particular becoming a very useful weapon in his 3-0 MMA record to date.
Meanwhile the well traveled Prangley has proven that despite now rapidly approaching his forties he’s still a tough, durable fighter, and picked up a split decision win over UFC vet Keith Jardine at Shark Fights 13 in September. A loss to Tim Kennedy and draw with Karl Amoussou in Strikeforce in 2010 has left him needing a win to secure his place in the promotion however.
