The UFC’s first card of 2011, UFC 125 in January just got a boost with the news that heavyweight contender Shane Carwin expects to compete at the event.
Carwin announced the news himself within the last hour via his twitter account.
“I expect to be on the January 1st card. I do not have an opponent yet. Any takers?”
So far Carwin does not know who he will be facing, but it seems he’s happy to face anyone in the 265lb bracket.
“I do not care who the opponent is. I have been in the gym working hard. It is time to see where I belong in the mix.
One man who has been mentioned as a possible opponent is TUF season 10 winner Roy Nelson who is currently working through rehabilitating his knee after surgery. Coincidentally just a few days ago Nelson suggested he too may be ready to return in a few months.
“I’m not sure hope the begining of 2011, but give me 20,000,000 million I fight anyone with one leg and wheelchair”
Whoever his opponent may be, this will be his first fight back since losing out in his bid to take the heavyweight title from Brock Lesnar at UFC 116 in July, a bout he looked to be winning before gassing out in the second round.
Since then Carwin’s clean-cut image has been somewhat tarnished by steroid allegations dating back to earlier in his MMA career. He has so far refused to comment on the story, which emerged after his name was mentioned in papers relating to a drugs trial during the summer.
He will surely now see a win on January 1st as the perfect way to put his recent woes behind him and begin to forge a new path to the title in 2011.
