Former UFC heavyweight No.1 contender Shane Carwin is set to undergo major back surgery today which he hopes will allow him to get back to full fitness and resume his climb back to the top of the divison.
Carwin detailed the nature of the surgery to fix a bulging disc in his back yesterday during an interview with Inside MMA.
“Its [sections] T10 to T12 so its basically the middle of the back and I have a disc that’s pressing into my spinal cord and its basically removed all the fluid around the area.”
It’s a serious procedure, but it’s clearly entirely neccessarily when you hear Carwin describe some of the symptoms he’s been suffering lately because of the problem.
“The first time something really bad happened was I was doing a seminar, drilling takedowns, and I got taken down and both my legs froze up. I actually thought I was paralysed. It lasted about ten or fifteen seconds and I wasn’t able to move them or anything.”
Luckily he recovered from that, but doctor’s warned him if he didn’t have the surgery he would have to quit fighting altogether.
Fingers crossed all goes well with his surgery and we can see him back in the Octagon 100% healthy at some stage in 2012.
