All credit to Shane Carwin for fighting on past round one this evening in the main event of UFC 131 despite suffering a ferocious first round beatdown at the hands of Junior Dos Santos.

The fight looked moments from being stopped, and some might say the referee should have stepped in, but somehow Carwin made it out of the round.

While he struggled to mount much offense in the final 10 minutes of the bout, the very fact that he was still standing was worthy of praise and perhaps goes some way to alleviating the questions regarding his cardio that emerged last year after gassing out in the second round of his fight with Brock Lesnar.

It was confirmed backstage that Carwin had several deep cuts, a broken nose and also had to be taken to hospital for scans. Check out the fighter’s bloodied and battered face after the first round in the picture below.
