Shawn Tompkins Leaving Xtreme Couture, Taking Some Fighters With Him

Highly regarded trainer Shawn Tompkins has now officially confirmed that he is leaving Xtreme Couture and will be re-establishing ‘Team Tompkins’ at the Tapout Training center.

In a video interview with FightersOnly he says “there’s no war or any battle.…the gym, the direction it’s going and the direction I want to go are two different things.”

He goes on to say that he wants to bring back the ‘Team Topkins’ brand and build a legacy that he can be proud of.  The comments have left some to wonder if Tompkins perhaps felt overshadowed by Randy Couture’s presence at the gym which holds his name.   By going out on his own he may now be looking further cement his position as one of the top MMA coaches in the sport today.

In the video Tompkins mentions that, “A lot of the fighters that i’ve been training over the years, and helping guide their careers are going to be coming with me.” He gives no clarification on who those fighters might be at this stage though. 

He also addresses the Junie Browning situation, having been a mentor to the fighter since his stint on The Ultimate Fighter reality show, and stated that “I will stand behind him and help him.”
