Perhaps Shine Fights should have named their latest show ‘Events Collide’ as on Saturday night their pay-per-view offering will go head-to-head with both Strikeforce and the UFC.
The up and coming promotion have certainly put together a credible card for the evening, with the jewel in their crown undoubtedly being the MMA Vs Boxing match-up between boxing’s bad boy Ricardo Mayorga and former UFC fighter Din Thomas.
That fight has undoubtedly brought some welcome publicity to the event and tweaked the curiosity of MMA fans, and it’s backed up by other familiar names from the sport such as Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua’s brother Maurilo ‘Ninja’ Rua, Charles ‘Krazy Horse’ Bennett’ and Braulio Estima.
On any other weekend this could have been a welcome diversion for fight fans.
The problems is that it falls on the same night as Strikeforce bring a quality card to Showtime named ‘Heavy Artillery’ with the return of Alistair Overeem against Brett Rogers and Andrei Arlovski Vs Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva sure to make this event the first destination for MMA’s hardcore fanbase.
To make matters worse Shine Fights are caught in the cross-fire as the UFC aim to counter-program the Strikeforce event with an ‘Ultimate Fights’ package of their own featuring recent fights like Frank Mir Vs Shane Carwin and Leonard Garcia Vs Chan Sung Jung.
One of the hopes for the Shine Fights card was that Mayorga’s presence might entice boxing fans to pay for the $29.95 event. While that could still be possible, they might instead by tempted to check out UK boxer and Freddie Roach protege Amir Khan, who is making his U.S debut against Paulie Malignaggi on HBO instead.
It’s an unfortunate situation, and it’s going to continue to be a problem for upstart promotions like Shine Fights as MMA’s biggest promotions continue to increase their output as the sport grows.
Oh, and did we mention that boxing promoter Don King has been trying to get the Mayorga Vs Thomas fight pulled because he believes he has an exclusive contract with the boxer?
It seems Shine Fights just can’t get a break.
