Stuck in the middle of today’s dramatic events in Las Vegas which saw Dana White announce at a UFC 137 pre-fight press conference that Nick Diaz had been removed from his title fight was the controversial fighters manager Cesar Gracie.
In a somewhat bizarre twist White actually answered a phone call from Gracie during the presser in which he apologized for Diaz not attending and told the UFC president that he fully agreed with his decision to pull him from the bout.
Soon afterwards Gracie then spoke with MMAJunkie to talk about the rapidly developing situation.
“I’ve stuck up for Nick, even when he was wrong before, but he’s let a lot of people down,” Gracie admitted. “He’s let his team down. We all bought plane tickets to Vegas. We got hotel rooms booked, paid for. We’ve got all that, and Nick just decided not to go to something he’s supposed to.”
As for why Diaz has acted in this way, Gracie knows him as well as anybody and he has his own suspicions.
“I’m not a psychologist, I personally think there’s some kind of social anxiety happening here with Nick.”
Understandably Gracie, who’s trained Diaz in BJJ for many years all the way through to black-belt, is distraught at the way things have panned out.
“I’ve barely slept in the last couple of days, and it’s sickened me. Here’s the opportunity that I’ve worked for for over 10 years, to mold a guy to become the best possible guy, and to show he can be the best guy in the world. And he takes this opportunity and he acts like an immature child about it.”
Clearly Gracie is not to blame for this situation and it should be noted that Dana White stated at today’s press conference that he held no ill-will towards the fighters manager.
