The UFC’s long-time television partner Spike TV are all set to do their bit to steal some of the thunder away from promotion’s big debut on FOX on November 12th by counter-programming it with UFC fights from their archive.
At present Spike owns the rights to the UFC’s library footage until the end of 2012 and they intend to use it to air a night of fights on November 12th, including fights featuring ‘UFC On FOX’ headliners Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.
Spike have already successfully counter-programmed the UFC earlier this year when they aired a re-run of Fight Night 22 at the same time as UFC Live 4 was airing on rival network Versus, and ended up scoring almost 50,000 more viewers on that night.
The main reason that Spike TV are doing this is to put pressure on the UFC to buy back the rights to their library which will free the network up to bring in Bellator Fighting Championships next year to fill the void that will be left when the UFC shifts their live fights and Ultimate Fighter series over to FOX in January.
Dana White made it clear last week that he does not intend to do so however, and accused Spike of “not honoring the spirit of the deal.”
