Following last night’s UFC On Versus 6 event in Washington D.C Dana White revealed that they are looking to bring another Strikeforce champion into the UFC fold as soon as possible.

He told reporters that Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is the man they have their sights set on.

“Yeah, we do want to bring Gilbert Melendez over, and we’re looking at it right now. We’re looking to bring Gilbert Melendez over ASAP.”

White also indicated that depending on the timing of the move Melendez could get an immediate title shot at 155lbs if the switch does take place.

Melendez is undoubtedly worthy of the chance. The 29 year-old sports a 19-2 career record and currently is on a five fight winning streak in which he’s really shown improvements as a fighter, getting the better of the likes of Shinya Aoki, Tatsuya Kawajiri And Josh Thomson along the way.

Reacting to the news that White wants him in the UFC, ‘El Nino’ was understandably excited and despite his loyalties to the Strikeforce promotion it appears that he too believes that it’s time to move on.

“Basically, it would (only take) a phone call from Dana saying drop everything you’re coming to the UFC. I’d be there in a heartbeat. Money doesn’t really mean nothing at this point, my money’s good, I’m happy with my money, if he told me to come fight for the same price, I would do it,” Melendez told MMAWeekly.

Melendez had been expected to defend his title against Jorge Masvidal in Strikeforce’s final show of the year in December, but given this latest news that now hangs in the balance.

If he does cross over Melendez will join a host of other big name stars who have done so, including Nick Diaz, Alistair Overeem and Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller, and will be yet another nail in Strikeforce’s coffin.
