Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery TV Ratings Are Weak

On Saturday night Strikeforce put on what most fans and pundits agree was a good night of fights on Showtime. The ‘Heavy Artillery’ event packed a punch by putting on four of the promotions top heavyweight fighters at the top of the card, including returning champion Alistair Overeem and former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski.

Unfortunately today’s TV ratings for the event suggest it was not a big hit with the viewing public as it pulled in just 308,000 viewers. That’s more than 30,000 down on Strikeforce: Evolution at the tail end of last year which featured a main event of Cung Le Vs Scott Smith.

Furthermore it’s 209,000 viewers down on the last Showtime event, Strikeforce: Miami, though admittedly the ratings for that show were considerably bolstered by the presence of NFL legend Herschel Walker in his MMA debut.

Strikeforce TV Ratings On Showtime:

Shamrock vs. Diaz: 364,000
Lawler vs. Shields: 275,000
Carano vs. Cyborg: 576,000
Strikeforce: Evolution: 341,000
Strikeforce: Miami: 517,000
Heavy Artillery: 308,000

The ratings will be a disappointment for Strikeforce as they try to put forward a strong case for CBS to hold a third event on network television, potentially with the evening’s big winner Alistair Overeem against Fedor Emelianenko.

If it’s any consolation to them, the UFC’s own ‘Ultimate Fights’ counter-programming on Spike TV at the same time on Saturday evening also posted below average results.

The hastily arranged two and a half hour ‘special’ featuring fights from recent events pulled in 894,000 viewers, significantly less than previous head-to-head shows with Strikeforce events which are generally seen by an audience of over 1 million.
