Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza is expected to defend his title against the fast rising Luke Rockhold at an event still to be announced in September.
Rockhold, a product of the Strikeforce Challengers series confirmed that the fight would be taking place in a message on Twitter.
“Words out, Im fighting Jacare for the title. I feel healthy, I feel ready and I feel I have all the tools to take his belt. It’s on,” Rockhold wrote. “I guess good things happen to people who wait! Lol fight will b [Sept 10].”
Rockhold, who’s been working his way up the ranks since joining the promotion in 2008 is now 7-1 in his MMA career and has defeated the likes of TUF competitors Jesse Taylor and Paul Bradley, along with Corey Devela.
Not exactly the type of competition that warrants a title shot, but the 26 year-old is a highly regarded prospect and his wrestling skills pose a problem for anyone he faces.
Meanwhile Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu superstar ‘Jacare’ has been on fine form since joining Strikeforce in December of ’09, producing four victories in a row, taking out some of the promotion’s top middleweight talents like Tim Kennedy, Matt Lindland and Robbie Lawler along the way to improve his career record to 14-2 (1nc).
Given the relative lack of competition left for him in Strikeforce’s 185lb divison, he may be extra motivated to put on a show in September in the hopes of being recruited to the UFC as welterweight champion Nick Diaz managed to do recently.
