Strikeforce’s future is still in doubt as 2011 draws to a close, and the lack of events being booked for the coming year could have been looked upon as an ominous sign, but there is some good new emerging today as word emerges that the promotion have targeted January for a show.

January 7th is the date Zuffa has in mind according to MMAfighting.com, with the event set to take place in Las Vegas and air live on Showtime. It’s been suggested that the event could host a middleweight title fight between current champion Luke Rockhold and Tim Kennedy.

Strikeforce’s current television deal with Showtime ends early next year and if they don’t agree to a contract extension then that could spell the end of the organization, but there’s been cause for hope recently with Dana White revealing that he’s now taken a lead role in negotiations with the network, while Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker declared following UFC 139 that he would bet money that the promotion was set to stick around.

The promotion still have one big event to go this year, with Gilbert Melendez and Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos both set to defend their respective titles on their December 17th card in San Diego.
