Strikeforce have called upon the services of veteran heavyweight campaigner Jeff Monson to take on heavyweight fighter Daniel Cormier at Strikeforce: Overeem Vs Werdum on June 18th.
Originally Cormier had been expected to face the promising Shane Del Rosario at the event, but after Del Rosario suffered significant injuries in a car accident last month they were left looking for an alternative.
Under the circumstances Monson is a good replacement. The former UFC fighter has become something of an MMA mercenary of late, fighting nine times in 2010, and having already racked up three this year.
While the competition hasn’t always been stellar he’s managed to rack up a 10-2 record over that period, and is currently eight fights undefeated.
Meanwhile former wrestler Cormier has quickly become a notable prospect in the heavyweight ranks, going 7-0 in his young career to date, winning the XMMA and King Of The Cage heavyweight titles along the way.
Monson will undoubtedly be his toughest test to date though, making this a welcome addition to the event.
