Strikeforce’s Marloes Coenen is currently preparing to embark on one of the biggest week’s in her fighting career.
Coenen, who was last seen losing by third round TKO to dominant 145lb champion Cris ‘Cyborg’ Santos has now moved down to 135lbs to fight for another title against Sarah Kaufman at Saturday night’s Strikeforce: Diaz Vs Noons 2 event.
It’s another tough bout for the Dutch fighter, but the 17-4 Coenen, dubbed ‘The Female Rickson’ for her submission savvy on the mat certainly has a decent chance of taking home the belt.
An eyebrow-raising piece of information leading up to this fight though is that Coenen also plans to fight just seven days later at the ‘Ultimate Glory 12’ event back in Holland against Lena Buytendijk.
It’s a bold move by the 29 year-old, though it’s worth bearing in mind that Buytendijk is a relative newcomer to MMA with a record of just 0-1. Still, her fight with Kaufman is likely to be tough, and has the potential to go the full five rounds so there’s no guarantee that she will be in a fit state to be contemplating another fight soon afterwards.
It’s hardly an ideal situation leading into a major fight on Showtime, but unfortunately the reality is that it’s often difficult for female mixed martial artists to get fights and so they have to grab what opportunities they can.
No doubt Coenen will be hoping for a swift submission victory on Saturday night, similar to her Strikeforce debut last year when she armbarred Roxanne Modaferri just 65 seconds into their fight.
