Thiago Alves put in a very good performance for much of his three round encounter with Martin Kampmann in the main event of UFC On FX 2 last night, but a decision to go for a takedown late in the final round proved to be a costly mistake that resulted in him being tapped.
“It’s devastating,” Alves said of his loss in a post-fight interview on Fuel TV, “But it’s out of my control. I know I did my best in every aspect. I was winning the fight for three rounds and I made a mistake and I paid for it.”
In hindsight ‘Pitbull’ admits that veering away from his traditional stand-up based gameplan was what cost him the fight.
“I feel now that I should have just kept him standing up and beat him up, i’m not sure [why I went] for a late takedown.”
Despite a generally good performance this defeat now leaves Alves with just two wins in his last six fights, but the former welterweight title challenger has vowed that he’ll come back stronger.
“What’s next is regroup, go back home and get better. This is in the past now and I know I’m better than this.”
