One fact that may have been underplayed during the chaos that erupted inside the cage at Saturday night’s Strikeforce: Nashville event is that three of the promotions current champions were at the center of the brawl.

The mmajunkie website was today able to confirm with the Tennessee Athletic Commission that an investigation into the incident is now underway.  That means that Strikeforce Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, welterweight title holder Nick Diaz and middleweight champ Jake Shields, who are all team-mates and training partners under the ‘Cesar Gracie BJJ’ banner, are now under the spotlight, along with former middleweight title challenger Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller.

In addition Strikeforce will be conducting their own investigation which could result in further punishment being handed down to those involved.

If there are to be repercussions for those involved then it will be very interesting to see what form they take.  From Strikeforce’s own point of view the best solution would be a fine, but it’s not been uncommon in other sports for the culprits to be suspended after similar incidents, and the Athletic Commission may view that as an appropriate punishment.

If that were to be the case then the length of the suspension could begin to impact on Strikeforce’s upcoming schedule, and put three of their five champions on the sidelines.

As it stands Nick Diaz is due to represent the promotion against Hayato Sakurai at a DREAM event on May 29th, while ‘Mayhem’ Miller was rumored to be getting lined up to face Robbie Lawler at a Strikeforce show in June.
