It’s no big secret – Melvin Manhoef’s ground game is almost non-existent, and Tim Kennedy made sure to exploit that weakness tonight at Strikeforce: Feijao Vs Henderson in Ohio.
Kennedy showed little interest in going toe-to-toe with the dangerous striker in the first round, and quickly went for a takedown, but struggled as Manhoef showcased improved takedown defense.
As he continued to frustrate Kennedy by shaking off his takedown attempts Manhoef began to think about some offense of his own, and his first heavy leg kick took Kennedy’s feet out from under him momentarily.
That only appeared to strengthen Kennedy’s resolve to take him down ASAP, and his persistence paid off when he finally got Manhoef flat on his back close to the cage and moved quickly to mount him.
From their there was an air of inevitability as he took Manhoef’s back, flattened him out and then, after softening up with a few strikes, sunk in the fight ending rear-naked choke with just 3.41mins gone.
