Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia will fight an as yet unnamed opponent at this years Dynamite!! 2009 MMA/K-1 fight card which takes place on New Years Eve in Japan.

Sylvia’s stock has dropped dramatically in recent times. After losing to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 81 last year, he then went on to be beaten by Fedor Emelianenko in just 36 seconds at Affliction: Banned, and most damagingly for his credibility, suffered a 9 second knockout at the hands of 48 year old boxer Ray Mercer in a smaller U.S promotion earlier this year.

Looking to get his career back on track Sylvia notched up a win over Jason Riley in September bringing his overall record to 25-6, and now will be back in the spotlight in Japan.

As for his likely opponent, the fighters manager Monte Cox told mma.fanhouse that both Alistair Overeem and Hong Man Choi were candidates, with the latter being the preferred option.

“We’re still trying to make a comeback, so I think he and Choi be the best match-up,” Cox said.
