One of a number of reasons behind former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia’s decline in the sport of MMA over the past few years since leaving the UFC has been his weight.

That became particularly apparent when he tipped the scales at a whopping 310.6lbs for his June 2009 fight with Ray Mercer.  The out-of-shape Sylvia was then knocked out in just 9 seconds, and left his MMA career in pieces.

Since then Sylvia has slowly tried to re-climb the ladder, and with four wins under his belt since then he seemed to be on the right track, while his weight also dropped, come in at 275lbs for his fight with another former UFC star Paul Buentello a year later, fueling talk of a possible return to the UFC or perhaps Strikeforce.

Tonight’s fight at Titan FC 16 with TUF season 10 competitor Abe Wagner was seen as another chance to prove himself worthy of a step back onto the big stage, but it seems he may have already harmed his chances of doing so before he’s even stepped into the cage.

Last night at the weigh-ins for the event Sylvia again looked in bad shape as he sheepishly stepped onto the scales fully clothed and came in at 311lbs. To be fair that’s within the allowed limit since this is a super-heavyweight fight, but it’s unlikely the big MMA promotions will come knocking until he can prove he can slim down to the 265lb heavyweight limit.

Sylvia says he still wants to fight for one of the major promotions and win a world title again before retiring, but whether he wins or loses tonight there’s now a major question mark over his commitment to make this become a reality.
