It appears that Tito Ortiz may just get his wish for a rubber match with Forrest Griffin.
Ortiz has been calling for the fight while recouperating from major neck surgery which he underwent earlier in the year, and according to TSN’s Showdown Joe the UFC are now looking to put together a third encounter between them at UFC 121 in October.
*Update: Contrary to Showdown Joe’s earlier report it’s now been confirmed that Ortiz will in fact be fighting Matt Hamill. More info here.*
The two former champions last fought at UFC 106, with Ortiz again returning after a long layoff due to injury. In the end Griffin claimed the split decision victory, canceling out a prior win for Ortiz dating back to 2008.
Due to the close nature of both fights a rubber match is somewhat justified, though the truth is this is not a fight that fans have been calling for.
Personally I was hoping for something like Griffin Vs Rich Franklin, with Ortiz perhaps getting an easier, less high-profile fight since he’s now had two major surgeries in recent times and hasn’t looked his old self in the cage.
On the bright side at least they are not trying to sell this as a main event as the UFC 121 show is set to be headlined by Brock Lesnar Vs Cain Velasquez.
