Long-time UFC lightweight fighter Tyson Griffin will be making the move down to featherweight, and his first opponent has now been confirmed.
Griffin will take on former TUF fighter Manny Gamburyan at UFC On Versus 4 which takes place on June 26th.
In many ways Gamburyan has already achieved what Griffin is about to attempt – reenergize his career by dropping down a division.
Gamburyan was a finalist in season of the The Ultimate Fighter season 5, but at just 5ft 5″ he was undersized for the 155lb weight class and struggled to put together a run, going 2-3 before being released.
He managed to remain under the Zuffa banner though by switching to WEC and dropping down to featherweight. A three fight winning streak followed and earned him a title shot against Jose Aldo, though he would go on to be defeated in convincing fashion.
Griffin currently finds himself in a similar position as ‘The Anvil’ did back then, coming of a string of losses in the increasingly stacked UFC lightweight division.
He’s undoubtedly a talented fighter though and he’ll be a big 145lb’er. If he can get past Gamburyan then there’s nothing to stop Griffin becoming a force at featherweight.
