It’s official, UFC 112 will take place in Abu Dhabi on the 10th of April in what will be an historic event for the promotion.
The news comes with confirmation of the major bouts, which will include two title bouts as Anderson Silva takes on Vitor Belfort for the middleweight title, while Frankie Edgar steps up to attempt to break BJ Penn’s grasp on the lightweight belt. The card also sees former welterweight champion Matt Hughes taking on another high profile member of one of the most famous martial arts dynasties – Renzo Gracie.
Initially there were plans that Flash Entertainment – the UFC’s new 10% stakeholder – would build an arena specifically for the event, but due to time constraints that idea has been put on hold for now.
Instead the event will take place at the Concert Arena, Ferrari World, Yas Island, which has previously played host to music acts like Beyonce, Aerosmith and Jamaroquai.
“This is one of the biggest and most significant nights in the history of the UFC,” Dana White stated in the official press release for the event. “UFC 112 is our first ever outdoor event and it is taking place in the hometown of our brand new partners, Flash Entertainment. We are very happy we could deliver what fans around the world will recognise as a stacked card featuring the sport’s biggest stars.”
The video below gives you a tour of the Ferrari World compex in Abu Dhabi which will play host the event. It’s certainly going to be a spectacle to see the UFC in this kind of environment.
