The UFC are up to their old tricks again. The promotion has announced they will counter Strikeforce’s June 26th event featuring Fedor Emelianenko Vs Fabricio Werdum on Showtime with a Spike TV replay of their recent UFC 113 event headlined by Lyoto Machida Vs Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua.
Strikeforce: Fedor Vs Werdum will also feature their woman’s champion ‘Cyborg’ Santos, along with a rematch of last December’s Cung Le Vs Scott Smith bout. Meanwhile the UFC 113 show will feature fights including Sam Stout Vs Jeremy Stephens and Kimbo Slice Vs Matt Mitrione.
A noticeable absentee from the UFC 113 replay is the much talked about co-main event bout between Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley. That’s perhaps unsurprising as the fight itself was nothing to write home about, and Daley’s unsportsmanlike sucker punch after the bell is clearly something the promotion would prefer not to relive.
UFC counter-programming major Strikeforce events has become a familiar story over the past year. Most recently the UFC put together an ‘Ultimate Fights’ package on Spike to draw attention away from the Strikeforce: Heavy Artillery live event in May, and with Fedor being Strikeforce’s biggest asset at this moment in time it was inevitable that something similar would be arranged for his next fight.
Both events air on Saturday 26th June at 9PM Eastern Time.
