After Mirko Cro Cop’s bout with Ben Rothwell at UFC 110 was canceled due to illness it was expected that the bout would be rescheduled for a later date, but it appears that plans have now changed.
Instead, mmajunkie today reported that Cro Cop will now face Pat Barry instead at UFC 115 in June.
It’s a bout that makes a lot of sense since both fighters are former K1 kickboxing competitors who prefer to strike, and possess lethal leg kicks.
That leaves Gilbert Yvel, who was originally expected to face Barry, without an opponent, and so he will now Rothwell instead at the same event.
It’s an interesting switch-up by the UFC. To my mind the real loser here is Yvel. After losing his first bout to Junior Dos Santos I’m sure he would have been looking to give a better showcase of his striking skills in what would have undoubtedly have been a purely stand-up encounter with Barry.
Now he will also have to be wary of Rothwell taking the fight to the floor, which has proven to be the weak spot in Yvel’s game in the past.
The up-side for the UFC is that the Cro Cop – Barry fight is likely to generate significantly more interest than either of the previously scheduled bouts would have.
