On Saturday night at UFC 123 BJ Penn will make his return to the welterweight division to take on old rival Matt Hughes.

The fight comes less than three months after his unsuccessful bid to regain the lightweight title from Frankie Edgar so there’s not been a whole lot of time to bulk up for this contest.

Speaking to Joe Rogan on Saturday night during the UFC 122 event Penn revealed that he was current at 165lbs. Given that Hughes will cut weight to make the 171lb limit and come fight night could weigh somewhere north of 180lbs that’s a lot of mass to give up. The Hawaiian is counting on his speed and skill to make the difference on the night though.

Below you can see Penn doing a weight check using the UFC’s official scales to see if he’s still on course. It turns out he’s actually dead on 170lbs which seems to surprise him a little, but considering we’re still several days out from the actual fight that’s still pretty light and shows he’s not going to have to concern himself with cutting weight at all come Friday’s official weigh-ins.

Fighting bigger opponents is nothing new to Penn though. He did fight at 220lb against Lyoto Machida in Hawaii back in 2005 after all, eventually losing on the judges scorecards after putting up a good fight under the circumstances.
