Prior to tonight’s UFC 124 event Jim Miller Vs Charles Oliveira was widely seen as an important showdown for the upper reaches of the UFC’s lightweight division, and a potential fight of the night candidate.
Oliveira started brightly in the striking department, appearing to trouble Miller with head kicks. Thinking better of standing with the Brazilian Miller then secured a takedown, but at first it looked like that may not be a good move as Oliveira threatened with a chain of submission attempts from his back.
Miller hung in there though, and after Oliveira tried to attack his leg he suddenly returned the favor, going for a knee-bar. At first Oliveira looked calm under pressure and threw some blows to his opponents body, but just seconds later he was tapping as Miller ratcheted up the pressure.
Oliveira looked distraught at having just lost the first fight of his MMA career, while Miller was rightly delighted with the quick finish, coming just 1.59mins into the fight against a highly regarded BJJ practitioner.
Surely Miller has to be in the title hunt now after seven consecutive victories in the octagon.
