On Saturday, April 30th, long-reigning UFC welterweight champion Georges St.Pierre will stand opposite a man weilding one of the most impressive records he’s ever faced, but that’s not something that intimidates the Canadian.
“Jake Shields hasn’t lost in six years. He has won 16 in a row, but he hasn’t fought me. The UFC world title is a different game.”
In his pre-fight interview with UFC.com Shields admitted that he’d been craving a fight with GSP for a number of years, and it appears that the feeling is mutual.
“He’s a guy that I wanted to fight for a long time. I think he’s the greatest fighter in the welterweight [division] now, he’s the guy to beat. The best guys are going to clash together that night and it’s going to be a good fight.”
As far as strategy goes, St.Pierre feels confident he has Shields number.
“Jake Shields is the best jiu-jitsu guy in the UFC right now. I know what he wants to do to me, he’s going to want to set-up his takedowns with striking, put me down, mount me and try to submit me from there.”
GSP on the other hand feels that he has a more well-rounded skill-set that will keep his opponent guessing.
“He doesn’t know what I want to do to him. I can knock him out standing up, I can knock him out on the floor or try to submit him.
I’m not afraid to go on the floor with him. That’s something different from everyone he’s faced before. Everyone that he’s fought has been afraid to go on the floor with him, but not me.”
And at the end of the day the Canadian superstar feels he’ll simply have too much for the latest challenger to his title.
“I’m a cleverer fighter, I’ll dictate the pace of the fight, I will fight my fight, and this fight will finish with ‘Still welterweight champion, Georges ‘Rush’ St.Pierre.'”
