The fact that last night’s UFC 129: GSP Vs Shields event in Toronto, Canada was going to smash the promotion’s attendance and gate record was well known in the lead up to fight, but what were the exact numbers?
At last night’s post-fight press conference Dana White revealed the official numbers, with the attendance standing at a whopping 55,724, while the gate was an equally impressive $12,075 million.
To give a sense of how big an accomplishment that is you need only look at their previous attendance record of 23,152 at UFC 124 late last year, and their prior gate record of $5.4 million which occured all the way back at UFC 66: Liddell Vs Ortiz 2 in 2006.
To celebrate this historic night in the UFC’s history the company handed out $129,000 bonuses to the recipients of the Knockout Of The Night (Lyoto Machida), Submission Of The Night (Pablo Garza) and Fight Of The Night (Jose Aldo Vs Mark Hominick).
With the UFC’s first attempt at a stadium event proving to be a resounding success Dana White confirmed at the post-fight press conference that they have every intention of doing more in the future, though they will only do so for major fight cards.
