If the fight announcements of the past 24 hours are anything to go by then it’s clear the UFC is looking to go all-out in the coming months to put on a series of stacked shows.
While UFC 136’s ever-expanding card was the focus of most of the announcements yesterday, there was also big news for the UFC 137 as well as a co-main event showdown between welterweight top contenders BJ Penn and Carlos Condit was made official.
On paper this looks like one of the most exciting fights the UFC could put on in any division at this moment in time.
Penn has so far KO’d his old rival Matt Hughes and fought to a competitive draw with Jon Fitch in his return to the 170lb division where he was once champion, and is now being driven on by the desire to become the champion once again.
Former WEC welterweight champion Condit has similar ambitions to climb to the top of the division however, and during his current four fight winning streak he’s shown that he’s capable of doing so with big wins over the likes of highly regarded contenders like Dan Hardy, Dong Hyun Kim and Jake Ellenberger.
Both of these men have a naturally entertaining fighting style when given the right match-up, so this one has all the makings of being a thrilling encounter.
The best thing of all is that the winner of this fight is more than likely going to meet the winner of the headline bout at the same event which features Georges St.Pierre looking to defend his title from former Strikeforce 170lb champion Nick Diaz.
