The UFC has announced another major headline fight for the second half of 2011, with UFC 138 on November 19th set to host the heavyweight title showdown between Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.
UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed the news in the L.A Times while also relaying that the event will take place at Strikeforce’s old stomping ground, The HP Pavillion in San Jose, California.
This fight had originally been scheduled for earlier in the year, but had to be postponed after Velasquez discovered he needed surgery on a torn rotator cuff. With the champion facing a long recovery period JDS then agreed to coach TUF 13 opposite Brock Lesnar with the two set to fight after the show’s conclusion.
Of course Lesnar then fell ill again with Diverticulitis and Dos Santos found himself in a title eliminator with Shane Carwin. The Brazilian managed to win that fight convincingly, and now leaves absolutely no doubt that he is the definitive No.1 contender in the division.
In many ways this is now the perfect time for the two best fighters in the heavyweight division at this moment in time to meet, with both now having racked up seven consecutive wins a piece inside the Octagon.
If the UFC can steer clear of their recent injury jinx then there’s going to be a series of big events on tap for the later months of this year, with Velasquez Vs Dos Santos joining other blockbuster title bouts such as UFC 135’s Jon Jones Vs ‘Rampage Jackson and UFC 137’s GSP Vs Nick Diaz.
