UFC 179 Bonus Awards

Following last night’s UFC 179 event in Brazil the recipients of the evening’s bonus awards were announced.

Rightfully picking up ‘Fight Of The Night’ honors was the main event battle between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes which proved to be one of the best title encounters of the year with back and forth and action and both men battling through adversity at times with the champion eventually emerging the winner after 25 minutes of compelling action.

The first ‘Performance Of The Night’ bonus was handed to Fabio Maldonado who was being controlled on the ground for theĀ  best part of two rounds by Hans Stringer before he suddenly found a way to get on top himself and took full advantage of it, raining down ground and pound strikes to earn a TKO stoppage followed by a celebration on top of the cage with Anderson Silva.

Finally, Gilbert Burns scooped up the other ‘Performance Of The Night’ award for an impressive display of jiu-jitsu in the prelims against Christos Giorgos that culminated in a slick, technical armbar finish.

Over the years I've watched the UFC develop into the powerhouse it is today, organizations like PRIDE, Strikeforce and WEC rise and fall, and Bellator emerge as a new force on the MMA landscape. Throughout it all I've remained captivated by the sport and I'm excited to cover what comes next here on MMA Insight.
