The UFC today announced that two preliminary bouts from Saturday night’s UFC ‘Fight For The Troops 2’ event in Texas will stream live on Facebook.
By simply clicking on the ‘like’ button on the UFC’s official Facebook page, fans will get access to both Cody McKenzie Vs Yves EdwardsDaMarques Johnson and Vs Mike Guymon.
The announcement marks the first time the UFC have used Facebook to air live content, though it’s not the first time recently that they’ve experimented with different ways of giving fans access to prelim fights.
Last year, along with a number of 1hr long shows on Spike TV, the UFC also delivered prelims via network TV station ION, and on their own website, ufc.com.
“I’m always looking for ways to give fans fights for free and this is just another example of that,” UFC President Dana White said. “Facebook is such a great tool for people to stay connected and we’re excited to put two live fights on our UFC page for free.”
It’s a smart ploy from the UFC, and one that continues to build on their already excellent use of social networking. Over 4.5 million fans already ‘like’ the UFC on Facebook, and with this latest offering they’ve ensured they’ll add significantly to that in the coming days.
Saturday’s free fights begin at 8pm on the Facebook site, an hour prior to the main card airing live on Spike TV.
