Prelims:

Joanna Jedrzejczyk defeats Claudia Gadelha by split decision (29-28 x2, 28-29)

Plenty of incidents in this enjoyable 115lb fight. The stand-up was competitive in the opening round, but Jedrzejczyk’s striking prowess told late in the round when she landed a vicious uppercut that dropped Gadelha and had her dazed though she was able to recover and make it to the buzzer. Gadelha rebounded in the second round though, using her wrestling and clinch work to control much of the round. There was a nasty accidental clash of heads in the early stage of the final round with Gadelha coming off worst from it with a cut. The fight was able to continue though and Gadelha appeared to control the action again with her wrestling and takedowns. There was a controversial moment as the final bell sounded with Gadelha landing a body kick just after the bell with Jedrezjczyk appearing to respond, then with the referee between them there was a moments pause before Gadelha lashed out again. That could have repercussions for one, or perhaps both, ladies at a later date, but for now it was down to the judges and surprisingly two saw it in Jedrzejczyk’s favor so she gets the split decision victory.

John Moraga defeats Willie Gates by submission (rear-naked choke) at 4.06mins of Rd3

Moraga found himself in real danger in the first round when he complained to the ref about a low blow then didn’t hear the official telling him to keep fighting. Gates did however and capitalized quickly by landing a big punch that dropped his unsuspecting opponent then following up with ground and pound and a rear-naked choke attempt. Moraga was able to recover and escape though. In the second Moroga then took the reigns in the fight with his low leg kicks causing constant problems for Gates, while in the third he continued to have the upperhand and was able to take his opponent down, soften him up with ground and pound before applying the fight ending rear-naked choke.

Ben Saunders defeats Joe Riggs by submission (injury) at 0.57mins of Rd1

Unfortunately swift ending to this one with Riggs hoisting Saunders up and dropping him down for a big takedown, but landing awkwardly and jarring his neck in the process leaving him in real pain and so soon after he had to tap out. Bizarre stuff that we’ve now had two fights in a row where takedowns-gone-wrong have been the beginning of the end of the fight. Afterwards Riggs revealed that he hurt his neck and his arm went numb during the takedown, so fingers crossed he’s ok.

Drew Dober defeats Jamie Varner by submission (rear-naked choke) at 1.52mins of Rd1

An early takedown attempt from Varner went all wrong here, dropping awkwardly backwards with Dober on top of him. Dober immediately took advantage of the situation by moving to his back and going for a rear-naked choke and that forced the tap out. Varner immediately afterwards revealed that he was dazed when he hit his head on the mat during the botched takedown. Then in a post-fight interview in the Octagon he announced that he would be retiring from the sport – something he’d been planning pre-fight.

Derek Brunson Vs Ed Herman cancelled

Fight cancelled due to Derek Brunson being unwell from a stomach issue.

Bryan Barberena defeats Joe Ellenberger by TKO at 3.24mins of Rd3

Ellenberger had a decent enough first round, but then began to look weary in the second round while Barberena was warming up nicely to the striking battle. Ellenberger rallied briefly in the third with a takedown, but Barberena was able to get back upright and then rocked Ellenberger with a left-right combo followed by another right before finally flooring his opponent. From there Barberena wore down his opponent with ground and pound to earn a TKO stoppage.

David Michaud def. Garett Whiteley via unanimous decision (29-28 x2, 30-27)

Elbows from Whiteley in the second round left Michaud bleeding prefusely, but overall in this fight Michaud was able to get the better of the action and emerges with a unanimous decision victory.

Henry Cejudo defeats Dustin Kimura by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

Cejudo didn’t even require his olympic gold medal wrestling tonight in his UFC debut, instead managing to get the better of Kimura with strikes on the feet over the course of three rounds to earn a clean sweep on the scorecards.

Ian Entwistle defeats Anthony Birchak by submission (heel hook) at 1.04mins of Rd1

Entwistle wastes no time producing a submission stoppage against Birchak who went for an early takedown and paid the price when he got caught in a heel hook he couldn’t escape.
