Prelims:

Beneil Dariush defeats Jim Miller by unanimous decision (29-28 x3)

There were some exciting scrambles at times in this 15 minute ground battle, but Dariush proved himself to be the more dominant grappler overall with long spells of control against his far more experienced opponent, while also being able to brush off his submission attempts.

Ovince St. Preux defeats Patrick Cummins by KO at 4.54mins of Rd1

For much of the opening round of this fight the pattern was clear with OSP looking to strike, while Cummins was on the hunt for takedown opportunities. Then, in the dying seconds of the round Cummins swooped in low, faking a takedown in attempt to to come back upstairs with an overhand right, but OSP perfectly timed an uppercut on the counter that dropped him on the spot. Ground and pound followed, relieving Cummins of his senses momentarily, handing OSP the KO win.

Gian Vallante defeats Cory Anderson by TKO at 4.18mins of Rd3

Hard leg kicks were Villante’s stock in trade for much of this fight as he got the better of Anderson in the striking battle. The finish eventually came via punches however as in the final minute of the fight he clocked his opponent with a hard blow to the temple that sent Anderson reeling across the Octagon on unsteady legs. A few more hard punches to the head followed to seal the TKO win.

Aljamain Sterling defeats Takeya Mizugaki by submission (arm triangle choke) at of Rd3

Sterling looked to be grinding his way to a fairly uneventful decision victory against Mizugaki until mid-way through the third round. Sterling appeared to be controlling the action on top, but Mizugaki managed to get a reversal to end up on top. Then came a completely unexpected finish as Sterling almost immediately managed to wrap up an arm triangle choke from his back and forced the tap! You don’t see that submission finished from that position very often, and especially against a veteran like Mizugaki, so that’s a real feather in Sterling’s cap.

Tim Means defeats George Sullivan by submission (arm triangle choke) at 3.41mins of Rd3

Means always looked to have the upper hand in this fight, though it was particularly apparent from the second round onwards as Sullivan’s tendency to load up with short bursts of explosive offense caught up with him and he began to gas out. Means hurt him on a few occasions with good elbows, but it was on the mat deep into the final round that he final produced the stoppage victory, seizing on an arm triangle choke to produce the tap.

Diego Brandao defeats Jim Hettes by TKO (doctor stoppage) at 5.00mins of Rd1

After a competitive first five minutes that Brandao was getting the better of, primarily on the mat, the fight was unexpectedly brought to a close in-between rounds when a doctor ruled that a deep, lengthy cut to to the top of Hettes left ear due to an elbow strike had left him unable to continue. Hettes seems bemused by the decision – he wanted to fight on.
