With a unanimous decision victory over Clay Guida last night Ben Henderson earned himself a title shot against lightweight champion Frankie Edgar.
After the post-fight presser Henderson spoke with MMAWeekly about the fight and what comes next. Check out the keynotes below and scroll down for the full video.
– Henderson believes he’s better than Edgar in all aspects of the game, but points out that as a fighter that’s you are supposed to have that level of self-belief.
“If I can perform the way I know I can when the cameras are on and stuff then I know I hold the edge [against Edgar].”
– Henderson believes it’s possible that Edgar is a slow starter, and is perhaps the kind of fighter that needs to be hit a few times before he really comes to life. If he sees any weaknesses in the champ’s game then he fully intends to exploit them.
He’s also not worried about Edgar’s famed speed and footwork, saying that just like any other opponent it’s just something that you have to get used to and prepare for.
– For Henderson a title shot isn’t any more of a motivation as he’s a self-motivated person who always wants to perform at his best no matter what’s on the line.
– Bendo is very complimentary of Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez, saying he’s extremely tough, has proven he can go five full rounds on numerous occasions and is very well rounded. He also jokes that all the members of Melendez fight team are tough as nails and will scrap with you just for stepping on their shoe. Despite that he still thinks he would win if they did fight.
