This Friday’s ‘UFC On FX 2’ event is somewhat unique in that it will feature the semi-finals of a four man tournament to welcome in their new 125lb flyweight division.

That in itself is somewhat surprising given that the UFC brass are generally against the tournament format, but over and above that it’s now emerging that they will also be tweaking the actual structure of the fights themselves.

Rather than the normal 3×5 minute rounds we’ve become accustomed to for non-title fights, the semi-finals here will also have the option of an additional ‘sudden death’ round in case either of the fights ends in a draw after the regulation 15 minutes.

While the UFC haven’t officially confirmed this themselves yet, one of the participants Demetrious ‘Mighty Mouse’ Johnson has confirmed that the contract he signed had this provision in it.

“I don’t know if anybody has said anything about it, and this is the first time I’m mentioning it, is that we (McCall and myself) had to sign for a ‘sudden death’ bout,” Johnson told TapouT Radio. “If it goes to three rounds, and the judges can’t decide who the winner is, then we’ll do a fourth round.”

Truth be told the chances are slim that we’ll see a draw in a three round fight, but you never know what might happen so it’s a smart move to include it just in case.
