In the final build-up to tomorrow night’s UFC 133 main event between Rashad Evans and Tito Ortiz the promotion have released a further two hype videos.
The first is a continuation of a satellite interview between the two men which apparently took place within the last week or so. To me it seems a bit manufactured and forced, but I can live with it. The other is a quick recap of the two fighter’s last encounter back in 2007, and has a few soundbytes from them on their upcoming bout.
On reflection it’s clear that Phil Davis pulling out of the main event and being replaced by Ortiz has actually worked out in the UFC’s favor. Given the past rivalry between the two, the fact that they both like to talk, and most importantly the fact that Ortiz is suddenly a meaningful figure in the sport again after finally getting a big win under his belt against Ryan Bader they’ve had far more to work with to hype up this event than they otherwise would have.
That’s no doubt a relief for them as the rest of the card has been decimated by injuries and left them with what looks on paper to be a slightly weak card. It’ll be interesting to see next week what the early PPV estimates are as that’ll give us a good indication of whether the buzz they’ve generated around Evans Vs Ortiz translates into sales.
