The UFC are set to make “a major announcement” in Canada on Tuesday.
A press conference has been set for the Rogers Center in Toronto hosted by Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta, which will include a Q&A session according to sportsnet.ca.
Major announcements by the UFC are always to be approached with some degree of caution since they have often in the past turned out to be far less exciting than fans had been anticipating.
So what could this announcement be about?
Given that it’s being held in Canada you have to think that factors into the equation somehow. Don’t be expecting to hear that Ontario have agreed to sanction the sport though, that’s not believed to be in the offing just yet.
One train of thought is that there will be some kind of link to The Ultimate Fighter Season 12 which will feature Canadian superstar Georges St.Pierre and Josh Koscheck as coaches. It could be that they are planning to shoot the series in Canada, or possibly that it will be a USA Vs Canada season.
Also on the TUF route, there has been talk that regional versions of the show could be starting up in the near future, and a Canadian show would certainly make sense in that regard.
On the other hand it could have something to do with the upcoming UFC 115 event in British Columbia, Canada, but considering the Liddell Vs Franklin headline bout is now well established it’s hard to imagine what else they could have to announce.
The final suggestion, as touted by sportsnet.ca is that it could in fact be that they will be announcing a new dedicated ‘UFC Canada’ office, similar to the one that currently operates in the UK under Marshall Zelaznik.
Canada has proven to be a major market for the UFC in recent years, and with recent and forthcoming events like UFC 113, UFC 115 and WEC 49 being held there, this is a move that would make a lot of sense.
Whether it does turn out be that, or something entirely different, rest assured that we’ll be covering it here on Tuesday.
