The UFC have already dropped jaw-dropping news on us in 2011 – Zuffa buying up the companies biggest rivals Strikeforce for instance left everyone, including many of the fighters stunned – but according to UFC president Dana White there’s still big things to come in the remainder of the year.
“There’s good stuff coming. It ain’t over yet. We’re going to blow everybody’s mind again before the year’s over,” White told MMAHeat’s Karyn Bryant yesterday following the UFC 130 pre-fight press conference.
Unfortunately he didn’t elaborate any further so we can only speculate as to what it may be. Here’s a few of our initial thoughts…
– A major new TV deal would be our first guess. It’s been talked about for a long time and with the UFC’s current deal with Spike TV set to run out at the end of the year the time is right for the promotion to finally land on a major network. NBC has been rumored to be one potential interested party recently for instance.
– Another stadium event is also a possibility. After the success of UFC 129 in Toronto White promised there would do it again, and something like the Dallas Cowboys stadium, which White himself has attented in the past, would be a suitable location for a big event. Would this equate to mind-blowing news though?
– The UFC and Strikeforce merging. This would be big news, but given that White genuinely appears to be uncertain about even a potential crossover fight between promotional champions GSP and Nick Diaz given Strikeforce’s current ties to Showtime I’d be somewhat surprised if he’s convinced that a full merger will happen before the end of the year.
– TV deals in India and China. While this is unlikely to blow the minds of many fans (unless you live in either of the two regions), White has been talking excitedly about getting the UFC into these markets for some time and says it would effectively double the worldwide audience of UFC events from half a billion to a billion.
