After news broke yesterday that Dominick Cruz has had to pull out of his latest title defense at UFC 148 in July due to a torn ACL, his intended opponent Urijah Faber stating what he hopes to see happen now.

Faber begins by commiserating with his rival on his injury woes, but then moves on to suggest that under the circumstances an interim title fight would now be the best way to proceed in his absence.

“I’m waiting to see what happens. I’m thinking an interim title. He’s been out almost a year and a half now [and] once this surgery goes through it’s going to be another nine months.”

Either way Faber has in mind some potential opponents who could step up and take Cruz’s place opposite him in the co-main event of the July 7th show.

“I’m hoping for a top contender. Renan Barao in my opinion is next up, Michael McDonald after that and Ivan Menjivar after that.”

Barao certainly looks to be the most deserving candidate here. He’s already 3-0 in the UFC, has a highly impressive 28-1-1 record overall and has been in terrific form recently.
