Vitor Belfort has yet again been overtaken by Chael Sonnen as the next man to face Anderson Silva after his impressive showing in their first meeting, but it’s clear that facing ‘The Spider’ is very much on his mind.
In a recent interview with Brazilian station Rede TV, Belfort states his belief that Silva can’t handle the power he possesses in his punches.
“If I hit him like Demian and Sonnen did, it’s going to be different because I have much more firepower,” Belfort says, later noting, “I know Anderson knows that if my hands hit him, he will not be able to stand on his feet,”
Belfort’s record certainly backs up his boasts with three clean KO’s in his last three fights and 13 in his 19 career victories.
While his ability to finish opponents is not in question, at times his mental state has been. Right now though it seems that Belfort is in a good place and excudes confidence and belief in his own abilities.
“No matter who’s on the other side of the cage, whether it’s Anderson or someone else, I’m going forward. If you look at my last fights, you’re going to see how focused I am. I know what I want. I have no doubt about what I want or what I’m able to do, so I’m very motivated.”
Part of his confidence seems to stem from knowing his fellow Brazilian’s style inside out.
“I know his whole game. I know his jiu-jitsu game. I know his stand-up game. I know he likes spinning kicks and loves to use elbows, but if I put my hands on a man, he will fall down.”
Before Belfort can back up his words in the cage against Silva he needs to overcome Yushin Okami at UFC 122 in Germany, and it’s a fight he’s looking forward to.
“They gave me a fight [against Okami] in November, and I’m really happy and anxious for that fight.
Of course there’s always the possibility that Chael Sonnen defeats Silva in their rematch, and if that happens Belfort’s No.1 priority will be too become the UFC’s next middleweight champion.
“I really want this belt,” Belfort said. “I want to face whoever has the belt.
